Newland Archer has just married the beautiful May Welland. The sensational arrival of May's cousin- Ellen-, who has recently returned to America after separating from her husband, is shocking the New York aristocracy with her revealing clothes, carefree manners, and rumors of adultery. As Archer starts to know Ellen, he begins to appreciate her unconventional views on New York society. Meanwhile, Archer becomes disillusioned with May. Soon, Archer realizes that he loves Ellen. But he feels obliged to act on behalf of the Mingott family and persuade Ellen to remain with her husband. Then, Archer and May marry and after their wedding and honeymoon in Europe, Archer and May settle down in New York.
Twenty-five years pass. In that time, the Archers have had three children and May has died from pneumonia. Now Archer's son convinces him to travel to France. READING BOOK

    -The Age of innocence

1- Newland Archer have all kind of relationship with almost the characters. He have relationship specially with May Welland with whom he married. But Newland really loves Ellen Olenska , but the rules of the society prevent their love. Another important character in Newland live is his son Bill who appears near the end of the novel when Newland and him went to visit Ellen to Paris.

2- Newland Archer is the main character of the novel. The history of the novel treats of his live and his love with May and Ellen. The first part of the book is about the marriage of May and Newland , and the second is about their lives and the suffering of Newland because in my opinion he really love Ellen but for fear to the society he stay with May and they have a children called Bill. Then after May died , he was alone forever.

3-Newland respects the rules of the society but he thinks that that rules are stupid because they cant do anything out of the rules. Ellen don’t like the rules of the society, she went of Europe where the society is more free and they don’t have to obey stupid rules about love or how to be a good man. Newland respect the rules because he have fear that the society reject him.

4- I think that they only have in common they points of view about the rules of the society and about the importance of follow that rules. Both think that the rules of the society are stupid and useless. Newland and Ellen also have in common their feelings, both love each other.

5-In my opinion the term “innocent” make refer to the relationship between Newland , May and Ellen because they have a history of love between they. And I think that that term mean also age, the age that they live the love and the rules that obstruct it.

6-Yes, I am really surprise by the decision of Newland because I thought that he will marriage with Ellen ant the end of the novel because he really love Ellen. But he marriage with May and they have a son. I think that this it a good book, I don’t like the histories of love and I really love the book. And at the end of the book when Newland doesn’t visit Ellen was sand and I really wish that they will meet again.

7-I would finish the history with a meeting between Ellen and Newland in Paris. I think they will be more happy. They would have a son and they will be happy forever. I think that the end of the book is very sad because when you are reading the novel you think that at the end Ellen and Newland will be marriage. In short I think that The age of innocence is a good book to read and learn English at the same time.

  9. 1.Choose one of the characters of the novel and explain his/her relationship with the others.
Newland marries May Welland. He has an appreciation attitude but he doesnt love her really because she continues the rolls of the society unlike Ellen.
This personage is the most important with newland.
Newland and Ellen meeted from children, but she married with a conde y she went. She return to New York because she was going to divorced.
Newland at first he try to convince it that was an error but with the time they fell in love but Newland already promised with May and Ellen return from with her husband.
Newland has been marring with May until that she died.
Newland was supporting very good relation with the whole May family, especially with the grandmother.
Newland was pleaded and belonged to the big families of the society.

2.Who is the main character of the novel? Answer the question reasoning it.
I think that the principal character is Newland because in the history showed la society of epoch and what can do in the people. Newland is the example and He is the lover who resigns from his real love for these norms of the epoch.
I think that the character as May or Ellen are only secondary characters.

3.Describe the differences between Newland's outlook on society and Ellen's.

In the society of Newland is common, that will say about persons, about inhabitants of the country, more even than own happiness. It’s what arrives Ellen who can’t divorce of a man with whom he isn’t happy by the society. However in Ellen's society doesn’t arrive, I the society Ellen exists a freedom of behaviour, of thought and of work.

4.What do Newland’s and Ellen’s views have in common?

Newland at the beginning of history sees Ellen as to a revolutionary, according to my point of view, in the course of time he opens eyes and he realises that this attitude likes him. They agree with whom if somebody is not happy next to another person dont have because to follow next to one by questions of appearance.

    5. What does the term "innocent" mean in the context of the novel?

I think that the term of innocence refers to the Misses as in May, who lived in the extrasensory world, except the normal, not to live his true life, his true thoughts were suppressed by the society, having that is why innocence of a child, without nastiness, without madness, without abstract thoughts, fact to return exclusively the happy husband. For my point of view, it has to be of a discontent for every person, and even for May the one who appeared that in the book she was so because she was simply so. I don't think this, I think that many attitudes or behaviour of May would have been very opposite if she would have shown his truth i, if she wouldn't have tried to be so innocent.
For me, it is the signification of innocent in the book.

6.Are you surprised by Newland's decision at the end of the novel? Tell why.

Yes, it was a surprise for me, although the book wouldn't have pleased me if he had ended up being happy with Ellen. Why? Because I think that love is important for life, but you shouldn't be by it selfish and egocentric persons. I don't know if I will be able to explain my point of view as I wait but I think that the person who more suffered in the book was May; a young nice, nice person, she married with a man him likes but she knows that he doesn't want her, that he loves his cousin and she living with him, having children with him, by knowing that he doesn't love her... Neither Ellen, nor Newland were if unhappy as May was it, and would be unfair for May, although she was the dead who were others happy two. Because in this life it is necessary to have a value and but Newland had him to say in May what he really smelt, and not to wait to have a child with May, he would be completely egocentric person to have a value to get once again the love of Ellen.

7.How would you end this story?

The end of history would not change by the reasons which I have already said.

1.Ellen is a countess who wants to divorce her husband (polish count). She goes with her family in order to receive some support in this difficult situation.
Newland is May´s boyfriend and Ellen is May´s cousine , her relationship with her is good . However she falls in love with Newland.

2.In my opinion, the main character of the novel is Newland because he realizes the society where he lives is a nonsense. It has strict rules about everything and above all it is mainly a society with pretends , that is to say , it never say the truth

    3. Newland first outlook about society is similar to those who share life with him following the same rules about behavior in society. On contrary Ellen´s views are more different than theirs because she has lived in Europe for a long time.

4.They both have in common for example not to do the same thing everyday at the same time

5.I think this adjective means a person who doesn´t know anything about a specific subject. For example May didn´t know that Newland for love to Ellen.

    6. Of course I was surprised his decision at the last moment. Because I thought they were in love to each other during all theirs lives. He had the chance to meet her again and now , he was a widow , that is to say he was a free man to have a relationship with Ellen

    7. I would finish this story with a happy end:
The meeting of Ellen and Newland and they would enjoy their love for ever

    - Newland with Ellen: they have a forbidden relation and they are very in loved.
    - Newland with Mrs Manson Mingot: their relation was very good. Mrs Manson Mingot was Ellen and May 's grandmother.
    - Newland with Mr Letterblair: they worked together in a lawyer's office.

    2. The main character of the novel is really Newland Archer because the novel deals with him and his life changes quickly when the countess Ellen arrive. However he decided to get married to May in spite of he really was in loved with Ellen.

    3. People are criticized very much by society in Newland. However , society in the Ellen's world is much more liberal. More over society in Newland are subdued some social rules. On the contrary , society Ellen haven't got any. The first society is consolidate to old customs and the second society show originality.

    4. At the begining of the novel , Newland was a person who was very estrict about the social rules. When Ellen arrived, they began to be lovers and she gets him to change his mind respect the society. In that moment, both of them think that the society should value less, subjects like divorce which was badly seen by the society where he lived.

    5. This term "innocent" refers to the innocence that May had , Newland's wife, because she was very young and at first she was very very in loved and she can't see the reality.

    6. Yes, very much, because Newland was so in loved of Ellen than he couldn't live without her and they haven't been seen for along time. That afternoon, when his son , Dallas, and he travelled to Paris, he had the big opportunity of seeing her , but he prefered sitting in a bank to wait for his son

6.Are you surprised by Newland´s decision at the end of the novel? Tell why.

Yes, I´m surprise because I don´t wait that Newland at the end doesn´t want to see Ellen after many years when he was fell in love of her, and now he has an opportunity to stay with her because his wife is dead and he doesn´t use this opportunity to stay with her.

7.How would you end this story?

  15. 1- Ellen Olenska has a good relationship with the other charecters of the novel although her mentality is very different from the way people from New York think. At first she is criticised because she had escaped with her husband´s secretary but she is accepted in society. She only disagreed or had arguments with Newland which is normal as they were in love but they couldn´t be together, and she knew she couldn´t accept his proposals as he was momend with her cousin and she didn´t want to hurt anybody.
2- I think that the main character of the novel is Neland Archer because the book is about his life and it also explains his deepest feeling and thoughts. This doesn´t happen with the rest of the characters.
3- Newland´s outlook on society is quite old fashioned at first. He had learnt the things that he had to do and the way he had to behave in his society of New York. However Ellen has a move modern mentality because she had lived in Europe. But when Newland knew Ellen he started to think different and to disagree with some customs of that society. On the other hand Ellen is more realistic than Newland.
4- Newland and Ellen´s views have in common that they hate dishonesty. They don´t like some of the customs of their society but both accept them, that is why they feel like prisoners in that society.
5- From my point of view the term “innocent” doesn´t mean innocent in the context of the novel because May Welland (Mrs Archer) pretends to be innocent as she doesn´t show that she knew that Ellen and her husband were lovers and she told Ellen that she was pregnant when she wasn´t still sure. She Knew that Ellen wouldn´t be with Newland again.
6- Yes, I am surprised by Newland´s decision at the end of the novel because I thought he would really want to see the woman he had loved so much again, besides now he was a widower and he didn´t have any problems to be with her.
7- At first I thought the best end for this story would be that Newland and Ellen were together at lost for the rest of then lives but I think the way it ends is the best because Newland and Ellen will always remember each other as they were when they fell in love. After thirty years things have changed very much and perhaps their relationship wouldn´t be as good as they could expect.

I choose the character of Newland Archer. He is happy to marry May because she followed the customs of New York society, but when he meets Ellen sees things differently. However, it remains with the wedding plans, including Archer insists May to advance the wedding. In this part of the book he is surprised since she tells him that she will cancel their commitment if he wants to marry his former mistress, but when he tells her he loves her, he turns to her as ever. When he married May, he notes that May exerts much control over him. They appear to be a happy marriage but it is only appearance. After the death of his wife, he discovers that his wife knew of his emptiness and shame because I loved Ellen.
